An emphasis on coaching and counseling can prevent disciplinary problems.
Many poor performance problems respond better to coaching than to disciplinary measures. However, disciplinary action as a behavioral control technique is necessary when self-discipline breaks down. Employees should be disciplined only if they choose to break the rules or are not willing to perform the job to standards.
- Attendance (unexcused absence, chronic absenteeism, tardiness, etc.)
- Poor performance
- Misconduct (theft, violence, damage to property, intoxication, etc.)
- Verbal warning
- Written warning
- Suspension without pay
- Termination of employment
